Experience

Experience is Adrian Valks fourth CD. A musical meandering in which creative powers find their way out of a primeval source of musical experience. This source allows the fusion of western brilliance with the sound and virtuosity of Senegal. With twelve meditations and two percussion improvisations a veritable firmament for reflection is attainable. A brilliant sparkling rain falls upon us. Never didactic, never opressive, always improvised and stimulating, we experience a direct hit to our musical heart. These meditations and improvisations harbour many vital emotions, from melancholy to eruptive vehemence. Silence and reflection tend to interchange.

4 Kwartetten uit de Mineralencyclus

On this CD you can listen to four quartets from Adrian Valks mineralcycles. This is an attempt to catch the slumbering individuality of these “slow living” stones in sounds. Parts of three of these quartets could be heard for the first time in january 1994 in a theater production by Dea Koert called, A hairy locomotion. A production about the life and work of the Mexican surrealist paintress Remedios Varos performed in the church of brothers in Zwolle (Broerenkerk).

IONA , Adriaan Valk & Godfried Hoogenveen

From “Sept pieces pour saxophone” 1975, (Valks first release) via “Dialogue for Altosaxophone and Cello” 1980, and “Anecdotes for Cello Solo” to the more recent quartets from the Mineralcycles, in which Adrian (in perfect alternation) attempts to capture all the life that this “dead” material emits. Music like indurated life, imprisoned in sparkling crystal.

JOB

Under the title JOB Adrian Valk composed 24 impressions for soprano saxophone. Characterized by originality this music summons up a suprising spectrum of different atmospheres. The solo pieces are a paragon of great virtuosity and sublime tone forming. Concerning Adrians philosophy that music is in its very essence a fluid, these compositions flow from and are an expression of the spirit within the human being. His long blown spherical tones comming out of nowhere awaken spiritual sounds that are truly uniek. Through razor sharp contrasts Adrian sketches the complexity of human life. With perfect motorial intuition Adrian demonstrates a masterly command of this medium at the very highest level with solos of inimitable speed. This is the performance of a highly creative and executant musician playing before the footlights with extremely convincing expressiveness. JOB is a sparkling event that stimulates the fantasy and is without question a major acquisition for the repetoire of the soprano saxophone. An inspirational example for modern music.

As wel as the soprano solos (JOB) there are also duets and quartets (“PERSPECTIVE” and “FIVE PAINTINGS”) on this CD, all composed by Adrian.
